It’s been widely reported, but we couldn’t leave out a significant event like the sale of registration number F1.

Bradford businessman Afzal Kahn paid a record price of £375,000 for number plate F1. Add VAT, and that brings the bill to a cool £440,625.

This exclusive private registration number was sold by Essex County Council, who first issued it in 1904 when registration numbers became mandatory. It was issued to the County Surveyor of Essex.

The sale this week breaks the previous record of £331,000 for registration number M1, sold in 2006. Some other number plates that have sold for six-figure sums include:

51 NGH at £254,000 in 2006

GS 1 at £220,000 in 2005

K1 NGS at £235,000 in 1993.

And of course, CEO 1 sold in 2007 after heavy bidding.

Mr Kahn owns automotive design company Kahn Design. He’s reported to be planning to assign the number plate F1 to “the ground breaking Range Rover Cosworth” to be released in the next few weeks.

Essex County Council have tried to sell number plate F1 before. In 2004, offers were invited by the Council. But the F1 registration number failed to achieve an acceptable price and was not sold.
